Q. Introducing 

A: Hello. My name is Sangyong Jeon, an integrated MS–PhD student in Professor Songnam Hong’s research group. I have been participating in a long-term overseas research program at the University of Michigan from July 1 to December 31, 2025.

Q. 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

A: 안녕하세요? 저는 2025년 7월 1일부터 2025년 12월 31일 까지 University of Michigan에서 장기 해외연수를 수행하고 있는 홍송남 교수님 연구실의 석박통합과정 전상용 입니다.

Q. Please describe your short-term and long-term goals for the research program, as well as your research activities and international exchange experience at the University of Michigan.

A: My short-term goal during this program is to strengthen my research capabilities and establish a solid foundation for developing new machine learning algorithms based on information theory. My long-term goal is to build a strong international research network through active collaboration and exchange with students and researchers from diverse backgrounds. To achieve my short-term goals, I have been holding regular meetings with Professor Alfred O. Hero, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Michigan, as well as postdoctoral researchers in his laboratory. Through these discussions, I am exploring methods to effectively apply representation learning algorithms to multimodal learning environments. This topic is closely aligned with my existing research interests, and analyzing learning structures from an information-theoretic perspective will serve as an important foundation for future algorithm design.

In addition, I have participated in a DNA/RNA analysis project using statistical methods, jointly conducted by University of Michigan faculty and researchers from the University of Wisconsin. Through this project, I was able to directly experience how statistical methodologies are applied to real biological data. Working with real-world datasets rather than focusing solely on theory has significantly contributed to improving my experimental research skills. Given the close relationship between statistics, information theory, and machine learning, I believe this experience will have a positive impact on both my short-term and long-term academic development.

For my long-term goal of expanding international exchange, I applied to and was admitted to International House Ann Arbor (IHAA), a multicultural residential community. IHAA is more than a living space; it is a community where international students from diverse backgrounds share their daily lives and academic interests. My current roommate is a student from India studying data science at the University of Michigan, and our daily conversations provide valuable opportunities to exchange academic ideas as well as cultural perspectives.

Q. University of Michigan에서의 해외연수의 단기적, 장기적인 목표와 연구 활동, 국제교류 경험 등에 대해서 말씀 부탁드립니다. 

A: 이번 연수기간 동안 단기적으로는 ‘information theory를 기반으로 한 Machine Learning의 새로운 알고리즘 창출을 위한 연구 역량 강화와 토대 마련’을 목표로 삼았으며, 장기적으로는 ‘국제학생들과의 교류를 통해 연구자로서의 인적 네트워크 형성’을 목표로 하여 연수에 임하고 있습니다. 먼저, 단기적 목표 위해 UM에서 Distinguished professor로 재직하고 있는 Hero 교수님, 연구실의 박사후연구원과의 미팅을 통해 representation learning에 활용되는  algorithm을   Multimodal learning 환경에 효과적으로 적용할 수 있는 방법을 고안하고 있습니다. 이는 제가 기존에 관심을 가지고 있던 연구 주제와 직결되는 하위 분야 중 하나이며 정보이론적 관점에서 학습 구조를 분석하고 이를 새로운 알고리즘 설계에 반영하는데 중요한 밑거름이 될 것 입니다. 추가적으로 현지 교수가 Wisconsin 대학교 연구진과 공동으로 진행 중인 ‘통계적 방법을 이용한 DNA/RNA 분석 프로젝트’에도 참여하게 되어 통계학에서 사용되는 다양한 방법론이 실제 생물학적 데이터 분석에 어떻게 적용되는지를 직접 경험할 수 있었습니다. 단순한 이론적인 이해에 그치지 않고, 실제 데이터를 다루며 분석 과정을 함께 수행한다면 제 연구에서의 실험 능력 함양에 있어 많은 도움이 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 또한, 통계학과 정보이론이 상당히 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있고 통계학 또한 머신러닝 구조 자체의 연구에 있어 주축이 되는 이론이라는 것을 고려한다면 이 프로젝트의 참여는 단기 및 장기적 학문 성장에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것 이라고 생각하고 있습니다.

또한 장기적 목표인 국제적 교류 확대를 위해 IHAA(International House Ann Arbor)라는 다문화 기반의 기숙사에 지원하여 입주할 수 있었습니다. 이곳은 단순한 거주 공간을 넘어, 서로 다른 배경을 가진 국제 학생들이 생활과 학문을 공유하는 공동체적 성격을 지닌 공간입니다. 현재 함께 생활하고 있는 룸메이트는 UM에서 data science를 연구하는 인도 출신 학생으로, 일상적인 대화 속에서도 학문적 아이디어와 각국의 문화적 차이를 교류할 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공해주고 있습니다.

Q. What outcomes do you expect from this research program, and what are your future plans?

A: Through this overseas research program, I expect to develop the academic foundation necessary for creating new machine learning algorithms and to gain practical insight into how to conduct independent research as a researcher. Furthermore, by interacting with students and researchers from diverse backgrounds, I anticipate expanding my academic network and continuing international collaborations even after completing this program.

A: 이번 연수를 통하여 머신러닝 관련하여 새로운 알고리즘 개발을 할 수 있는 학문적 소양을 기르고 연구자로서 연구를 수행하는 방법에 대해 체득할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있습니다. 

또한 다양한 학생 및 연구원들과의 교류를 통해 학문적 기반을 확장하고 연수 후에도 국제적 협력을 보다 활발히 이어갈 수 있을 것으로 예상됩니다.
